Menu Foods Income Fund Announces Precautionary Dog and Cat Food Recall

Menu Foods Income Fund (the "Fund") (TSX:MEW.UN) today announced the precautionary recall of a portion of the dog and cat food it
manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The recall is limited to "cuts and gravy" style pet food in cans and pouches
manufactured at two of the Fund's United States facilities. These products are both manufactured and sold under private-label and are
contract-manufactured for some national brands.
Over the past several days, the Fund has received feedback in the United States (none in Canada) raising concerns about pet food
manufactured since early December, and its impact on the renal health of the pets consuming the products. Shortly after receipt of the first
complaint, the Fund initiated a substantial battery of technical tests, conducted by both internal and external specialists, but has failed to
identify any issues with the products in question. The Fund has, however, discovered that timing of the production associated with these
complaints, coincides with the introduction of an ingredient from a new supplier. The Fund stopped using this ingredient shortly after this
discovery and production since then has been undertaken using ingredients from another source.
At the same time, the Fund's largest customer, for which it manufactures on a contract basis, received a small number of consumer
complaints and has initiated its own recall. Furthermore, for the time being, the customer has put future orders for cuts and gravy products on
hold. This customer's cuts and gravy purchases in 2006 represented approximately 11% of the Fund's annual revenue.
"We take these complaints very seriously and, while we are still looking for a specific cause, we are acting to err on the side of caution" said
Paul K. Henderson, President and CEO, Menu Foods. "We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that our products maintain the very
highest quality standards."
While the number of complaints has been relatively small, Menu is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the
health and well-being of pets is paramount to the Fund.
In addition to changing suppliers, for production after March 6, the Fund has increased testing of all raw materials and finished goods. It is
also working closely with regulatory authorities and its customers to learn more and will take whatever additional actions are appropriate. The
Fund estimates that based on currently available information, this recall could cost between $30 million and $40 million, which will be
financed from a combination of internally generated cash flow and bank credit facilities. Furthermore, the Fund is aggressively producing
product, utilizing a different supplier for the ingredient in question, to replenish customers as quickly as possible.
In order to determine whether cat and dog food in their possession is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the list of brand names
("listed products") at www.menufoods.com/recall. This will be available by 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007. Products not identified on the
website can continue to be used.

Venison & Brown Rice dry dog food now on dog food recall list.
Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc. is recalling two pet foods – Venison & Brown Rice dry dog food and Venison & Green Pea dry cat food – after consumers complained of pets vomiting and experiencing kidney problems.
The animals’ symptoms are similar to those in pets affected by the Menu Foods’ recall of more than 90 foods last month, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is investigating both recalls, says there is no indication at this time whether these incidents are related.
Neither of the venison diets contain wheat products, according to Natural Balance’s ingredient list.
Although the company believes the problems are limited to one particular lot of food, it is recalling affected products of all dates from shelves and advising pet owners to stop feeding all Venison & Brown Rice dry dog food and Venison & Green Pea dry cat food that they might have at home.
Pacoima, Calif.-based Natural Balance, co-owned by actor Dick Van Patten, also produces organic, raw and allergy formulas of its food, as well as zoo diets. None of its other products is affected, the company said.
The FDA’s website, www.fda.gov, includes a full list of recalled products.

More Recalls Announced, More to Come
More foods were added to the recall list on Sunday, then again on Tuesday, and the lot numbers and production dates of several other foods were expanded. Some of the newly-recalled foods did not contain wheat gluten, leading to fears and rumors that more foods - possibly even some human products - would be recalled on Wednesday or later in the week.

After the pet food recall that began more than a month ago and ensnared 100-plus brands and counting, some pet food manufacturers are no longer buying ingredients from China.
Although recent hearings on Capitol Hill suggest that Congress is considering stricter federal oversight of the country’s food supply system, including pet food, Bill Bishop, president of Blue Buffalo in Wilton, Conn., said it’s up to the pet food industry to make immediate changes.
“If there’s going to be additional regulation, it’s going to take awhile,” he said. “The industry has to do it right away.”
Blue Buffalo recalled all of its canned and biscuit products from shelves after it says it learned that rice protein concentrate possibly contaminated by melamine was wrongfully added to some of its formulas by its manufacturing partner. The company said it was actively looking for a new cannery.
“All of our data indicate it was an isolated incident,” said Jerry Krueger, vice president of C. J. The Pawnee City, Neb., company said it will no longer source ingredients from “exotic locations” and added melamine to its standard testing protocols, it said.
The grain proteins contaminated by melamine—wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate—were imported from Chinese plants that might have added melamine and cyanuric acid, another nitrogen-rich component found in recalled pet food, to artificially boost the protein content of the products, according to Stephen Sundlof, D.V.M., director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.
Blue Buffalo, which does not manufacture any of its own food, was “surprised” to learn that one of its ingredients was being sourced from China, Bishop said. The company will no longer source ingredients from China or use any vegetable proteins in its food.
“You’ll wind up with a more expensive product,” he said. “You’ll take a little bit of a margin hit, or pass it along to consumers.
As president of a smaller company that doesn’t answer to board members, Bishop is willing to take that financial risk to reassure customers that his products are safe, he said.
“[Pet owners] need assurance of where these ingredients are coming from,” he said. “The way that they care about their pets, they don’t care if it’s a couple bucks more.”
Royal Canin USA of St. Charles, Mo., which recalled several dog products and one cat food to possible contamination by melamine, also said it will “no longer use any Chinese suppliers for any of our vegetable proteins.”
“Royal Canin USA is reviewing all of its supplier relationships to ensure that we continue to provide pets with the highest-quality ingredients available,” said Ann Hudson, director of marketing.
Although none of its products were affected by the massive recall, Natura Pet Products of San Jose, Calif., also instructed its buyers to use ingredients from domestic suppliers only.
In addition, Peter Atkins, one of Natura’s founders, said the company would build or acquire its own canning plant to ensure the safety of its pet food.
“We must ultimately control the manufacture of all products that we sell,” he said. Previously, a South Dakota Menu Foods plant had made some of its products, Atkins said.
According to the National Assn. of Wheat Growers, almost half of U.S.-produced wheat is exported, but 70 percent of wheat gluten is imported.
“While every food safety issue cannot be avoided, it is extremely unlikely that a situation like the current problem with Chinese wheat gluten would happen with U.S.-raised wheat,” said John Thaemert, president of the association.
It appears that much of the country’s rice protein concentrate is imported as well. Although more than 80 percent of the rice consumed in the United States is grown here, only a handful of companies make rice protein concentrate, according to David Coia, a spokesman for the U.S.A Rice Federation.
David Janow, president of Axiom Foods in Los Angeles, said his company produces a food-grade rice protein concentrate that it imports from China and sells primarily to manufacturers of human nutrition products, such as protein shakes. As a result of the recent recall, Axiom tested all its products and found no melamine, he said.
At a congressional hearing, many members of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations called for further scrutiny of imported food products.
Regarding the pet food recall, Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon asked, “Doesn’t that lend itself to the call for mandatory country of origin labeling so we know where the food is coming from as a consumer?”
Paul Henderson of Menu Foods, the Canadian manufacturer that initiated the March 15 recall of pet food, said he didn’t think it was commercially practical.
The Pet Food Institute, an association representing U.S. pet food manufacturers, agreed.
“We’re living in a world economy,” said Duane Ekedahl, president of the institute. It is neither likely nor necessary for companies to stop sourcing ingredients from China, he said. Labeling would be “unduly confusing” to consumers, he added.
“This was an unexpected event that we expect to be a one-time event,” Ekedahl said. “It was an adulteration … This issue is behind us.”
Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colorado, called for mandatory FDA recalls rather than the voluntary system now in operation.
“The FDA under President Bush’s leadership is becoming more reliant on industry to police itself,” she said. “Inspections are going down as imports are going up. Unfortunately, this latest string of incidents seems to indicate the problem is getting worse, not better.”
Henderson said a mandatory recall would not have changed his company’s response to the recall.
“I hope the hearings don’t lead to an over-regulation of the industry,” Ekedahl said. “No regulation would have caught this.”
The Pet Food Institute recently created a National Pet Food Commission to investigate the cause of the recall. At the end of its investigation, the commission will present its recommendations to the industry, Ekedahl said.
